When Dems Say The Wrong Thing

Dems can call the president a terrorist and win re-election, but it's electoin suicide to call their primary opponent fat ... at least if she's a woman. (See post below to verify that it's OK for Dems to call a Republican fat.)

The prover of the point is William Donald Schaefer (right), who's held office in Maryland for 51 years, but got turned out yesterday, losing his race for re-election as state comptroller. Terrapins know all this stuff, but for the rest of us, we can only shake our heads as we learn from AP:
  • He said [his opponent, Janet] Owens was fat. He criticized her hair style. He described her as "Mother Hubbard" in one breath and said she looked like a man in another.

  • He angered Marylanders of Korean descent by saying that Korea wanted to drop a bomb on the United States, failing to note the distinction between North and South Korea.

  • At a public meeting earlier this year, he asked a young woman who had brought him a cup of tea to walk across the room one more time while he made a show of ogling her backside. He refused to apologize to "this little girl" and said she ought to be "happy that I observed her going out the door." (source)
So, if you're reading this and are thinking about running for office as a Dem (anyone? anyone?), remember that you can be unpatriotic, unamerican, but definitely not politically incorrect.
