Minoring In Diversity
Students at the University of Washington can now waste their parents' money getting a minor in diversity studies.
And on their way to class, they can walk by this monument to diversity, called "Blocked Out." Unlike the classic statues that dot the campus -- captains of industry, heads of state -- this one has an empty pedestal, with just a set of footprints at the top.
A plaque on a nearby cedar tree reads:
But back to the minor in diversity studies. UW designed a program with six foundation courses: Introduction to Women Studies; People of the USA; Introduction to American Ethnic Groups; Religion, Identity and Cultural Pluralism; Introduction to Disability Studies, and Racism and Minority Groups.
Note that there are follow-up course in disability studies, American ethnic groups and womens studies. Wow. So much to learn.
What will students take away from these classes? That white America and its continuing establishment is bad. That victimhood is good. That exploitation lives. That compassion and tolerance remain specious goals.
If I ever see "diversity studies minor" on a resume that crosses my desk, what do you think my reaction will be? I'd tolerate their interest, but I sure wouldn't offer them a job.

“BLOCKED OUT—Dedicated to those who are excluded from the house they were exploited to create.”I wouldn't have a problem with the statue if it said "those who were excluded," instead of "those who are." We shouldn't turn from our undiverse past; nor should we, in the name of victimhood, pretend that we haven't changed our ways.
