It's Been Said Before, But ...

Here's Harry Reid on Bush's movement towards naming a second Supreme nominee:
"[O'Connor has] been a voice of reason and moderation on the court. It is vital that she be replaced by someone like her, someone who embodies the fundamental American values of freedom, equality and fairness."
It's been said before, but I'll say it again: Where was Reid with this statement with Judge Rehnquist died?

The question is all the more relevant, amid reports (same link as above) that People for the American Way and other Lefties have met with Reid, begging the Dems to hold the line against Roberts:
The stated goal, several officials said, was to show Bush that he does not have the leeway to move significantly to the right with his next appointment without risking a major fight at a time when his poll numbers have been in decline.
You can't have it both ways, Harry. If you're going to demand O'Connor II, you've got to vote for Rehnquist II. And forget O'Connor II. The President got a mandate last November to move the court to a more conservative make-up.
