Morality Poll Hurts Dems

In the last two years, the number of people who think the state of moral values in America is going to get worse grew from 67% to 77%, an astonishing amount of movement in a short period of time. To the DNC, which has to appeal to a large number of gays, abortion-rights advocates, PETA wackos, euthanasia boosters and the like, Gallup's 2005 Values and Beliefs survey is another dose of bad news.

They can rightly say that concern about morality has increased on Bush's watch, but they would be hard pressed to find a Bush policy that concerns morality voters. But their platform is getting less and less popular:
  • Abortion: Only 40% find it morally acceptable; 51% do not.
  • Death penalty: 70% find it morally acceptable; 25% do not.
  • Homosexual relations: 44% find it morally acceptable; 52% do not.
Not all in the survey is cheery for the GOP, as the majority accepts as moral stem cell research and euthanasia. Euthanasia is nearly evenly split, while embryonic stem cell research enjoys a comfortable "morality cushion."

How moral are Americans? Well, the most morally unacceptable behavior is still having an affair, with just five percent thinking it's moral ... edging out polygamy, with six percent.
