Whitaker's Statement

For the full text of Newsweek editor first Mark Whitaker's statement on the "death by misreporting" story, click here. This is as close to an apology he gets:
But we regret that we got any part of our story wrong, and extend our sympathies to victims of the violence and to the U.S. soldiers caught in its midst.
Regret?! Sympathies?! You know the entire senior editorial and legal staffs were huddled around, going over every word of Whitaker's statement. Did they ever put the word "apology" in a draft? Did it never occur to them to apologize?
