Meek George, Mighty Mahmoud
I just noticed this ... did anyone else?
On the front page of yesterday's NYT, Bush's photo gets top billing ... he spoke first, after all ... but the angle makes him look diminutive, even though he is considerably taller than Ahmadinejad. His hands are flat on the podium, his eyes downcast, his mouth barely open, all combining to give the impression that he gave a flat and unexciting speech.
Ahmadinejad, on the other hand, is shot from a lower angle, giving this tiny man extra stature. His arms are up in a prophetic stance, his eyes forward, his mouth open, all signs of a dynamic person giving a dynamic speech.
You've heard the cameras at these events, the incessent clicking. You know the NYT photo editors had a hundred frames or more of each speaker to select from ... and this is the result.
Tell me ... do you think, as I do, that the photos should have been printed ragged right?
