Bolton Delivers

Nancy and Harry, you got some 'splainin' to do.

Here we thought Bush's cowboy presidency and disrepect for Old Europe and old diplomacy had destroyed America's global abilities and reputation.

And here we thought that John Bolton was such a loose cannon, he would be more likely to destroy the UN than utilize it effectively.

So, Nan and Harry, what's this?

The United States and France agreed Saturday on a draft UN Security Council resolution that calls for a "full cessation" of fighting between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas, but would allow Israel to defend itself if attacked.

Bolton and France worked not just to get a cease-fire resolution, but the right cease-fire resolution, one that makes it clear Hezbollah is the aggressor, and one that forbids the sale of arms to any entity in Lebanon other than the government. That would give the world a way to force controls onto Syria and Iran.

The supposedly too hot-headed Bolton said of the deal:

"We're prepared to continue to work tomorrow in order to make progress on the adoption of the resolution but we have reached agreement and we're now ready to proceed. We're prepared to move as quickly as other members of the council want to move."

Just enough jab at the Security Council, skillfully delivered.
