Tortured Negotiations
Whoa! Don't cross this guy, or the guy behind him. John McCain doesn't want any fingernails pulled on anyone, anywhere, anytime -- and with glares like that, he's getting his way.
Now that a McCain-Bush compromise has been reached, the torture ban will pass Congress. The vote will not convince those who hate us that we really are a good country, but it should protect our soldiers from false charges brought by those who would ruin the life of a soldier to further their cause.
The real test of the McCain amendment will be in the field. Some believe that harsh interrogation brings more false information; some believe gentler interrogation will bring nothing. Now we have no choice but to find out.
Unless, of course, McCain agreed to support rendering terrorist suspects to other countries in return for a ban on torture by the US.
