Troubling Photo Essay of Iraq Tragedy
This lead-in shot of a Newsweek photo essay establishes the mood of what is to come: A terrible tragedy as six Iraqi children are instantaneously orphaned when US soldiers fired into the car their parents were driving, as it failed to stop at a roadblock.
The essay is nonjudgmental documentary journalism, presenting in vividly close and painful photos how the children and the soldiers respond to this terrible situation. It shows the stark contrast of pain and compassion that often occur side-by-side in war.
