DNC Comment On Pope's Passing

I almost missed this statement from the DNC:

"Today we join citizens around the world in mourning the loss of Pope John Paul II. Throughout his life, the Pope fought for justice, peace and equality for all people. He served as the spiritual leader for millions of Catholics and as an example of faith for people throughout the world. His message of peace lives on.

"Our thoughts and prayers join with the millions throughout the world who mourn the loss of this great man."

It's that confusing morality thing again. The DNC finds itself in the unenviable position of not being able to say anything nice about a pope who is loved by millions, because John Paul II fought tooth and nail against them on their hold-to-the-death platform planks of abortion and gay marriage.

Read the statement again. They never lament his passing; they only "feel the pain" of those who are suffering his loss. They select those parts of the past papacy that pick up their messaging themes -- justice, equality, peace -- as their own, but when it comes to faith, he's just an "example to people throughout the world." That's an admission, not something they like or praise.
