No Exploding Mohammeds

Spanish villages are toning down their "Reconquista" festivals, which mark the defeat of Muslim rule of Iberia in 1492:

Spanish villages are toning down traditional fiestas in which revelers blow up dummies representing the Prophet Mohammed for fear of offending Muslims, the newspaper El Pais reported on Monday.

One eastern Spanish village, Bocairent, decided to abandon the custom of packing the head of a dummy representing Mohammed with fireworks after seeing the angry response by Muslims to a Danish newspaper's publication last year of cartoons of him.

El Pais found that several other villages in the Valencia region had also modified similar fiestas this year. (Reuters)

There are plenty of Muslims in Spain, and they've been known to blow up trains and do other nasties, so this is understandable.

But is it right? Do we kowtow to the crazies or give them a big Bronx cheer?

I know of no Muslim festivals where they disrespect Christ, God or any of the OT prophets, so I'm going to go with the Spanish villages that toned down their ceremonies ... like Bocairent, where they didn't set fireworks off in Mohammed's head. No, they respectfully threw the Prophet dummy off a castle wall.
