Free Speech For Sorry Idiots
Let's get right to the point. The people that attend the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka KS, who demonstrate with appalling bad taste at the funerals of soldiers because they feel God is punishing America for condoning homosexuality, are not Christians.
Christians were taught to love sinners (including homosexuals) and to reach out gently to others with the Gospel of Christ. We are even taught to adopt others' customs (while staying true to the faith in more important ways) in order to reach outsiders with the Salvation Message. These renegades bring shame on the Christian church and no doubt make our Savior weep.
But what should be done with them? Nine states have passed laws prohibiting demonstrations at funerals and 23 others are considering similar legislation. Congress expects to take up legislation in May, which would be limited to federal cemetaries.
Wisconsin appears to be going the farthest with a bill that would bar "any visual image that conveys fighting words" near funerals.
I don't think this is a place for laws, because not every funeral is one for a brave soldier and his or her grieving family. Someday a guy who was a despicable scum of a human may be receiving pomp and honor at his funeral, and I'd like to have the right to be there with a sign.
The better approach to the problem is free speech itself. Every time they show up, a bigger crowd of really, really big guys shows up too, and excercises their free speech between the demonstrators and the funerals, blocking all views, making the Westboro Baptist Church members as irrelevant as they truly are.
