Malloch Brown and December 5
The leaking of yesterday's NYTimes story on the secret December 5 "woodshed" meeting of top US supporters of the UN and Kofi Annan (see post a few down) was interestingly timed to serve as a precursor to the announcement, made later yesterday, that the somewhat renegadish Briton Molloch Brown is being named Kofi's right-hand man.
The Times of London said this of Brown: "a former Economist journalist educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, is considered to be one of the most politically savvy and media-friendly officials in the UN system," and quoted Brown saying, “I’d like to think that the Secretary-General wants me to make a move, which in a formal sense isn’t a promotion, because he wanted this particular set of management, policy and communications skills at this particular time available to him.”
De-diplomaticized, that reads, "I was shoved on Annan. He had no choice."
Curiously, as of this hour, The Economist, has nothing on its site about the appointment of its former employee.
