What Is Biden Smoking?

Sharks are circling Donald Rumsfeld again, this time because he said, "Turning our backs on postwar Iraq today would be the modern equivalent of handing postwar Germany back to the Nazis."

Kissinger and Brzezinski both attacked the historical accuracy of the quote, saying Germany's opposition was totally crushed, so there's no comparison. Typical academics; pick at the details, miss the point.

But it was Joe Biden who really took off into looneyland. He told CNN:

"Imagine what would happen if it were announced tomorrow in the headlines of the papers of America and throughout the world that Rumsfeld was fired. It would energize, energize the rest of the world, to be willing to help us. It would energize American forces, it would energize the political environment."

My mouth drops. First, "fired." Rumsfeld will never be fired. He might tender his resignation and have it accepted with great sadness over his departure and with laurel wreaths for his accomplishments. Biden's losing touch with reality.

He's right; there's a portion of the world that would be energized: our Islamist foes. He's wrong; they would not be energized to help us.

Our troops would see a good man lost, but would have faith in our country and would soldier on with barely more than a grunt.

And the political environment? Yes, Joe's right. It would energize the Dems, who would immediately begin planning how to embarrass America and the newly appointed Defense Secretary.
